The False Dichotomy of Mathematics and The Paradox of Equations

Was mathematics created or discovered?

I inadvertently extracted a deep philosophical metaphor from humor to demystify the paradox of mathematics; the joke goes like this; “Superman wears a cape with an S on it, that’s how I know a Villain can never capture Superman, because he has an “escape/s-cape.” The surface value depicts the ambiguous nature on “punster-ism,” but the philosophical undertone unravel multiple layers—- like an onion.

There’s myriad of improbable variables involved in the structure of this joke, one that’s contingent on a number of elements bringing this sort of observational comradely together. Regardless of the circumstances, Superman inevitably escapes, no exception; the underlying logic begs a deep philosophical question—was the innate structure of the joke created or discovered? I pondered on this notion for months and derived to an intriguing conclusion; there’s a clear distinction between an idea and an immutable deductive law; the former being contrived by human cognition, and the latter is an independent absolute.

Asking the question; was mathematics created or discovered, is actually a false dichotomy sort of rhetoric, the black or white, either or, jointly exhaustive alternatives or bifurcation that excludes all added conjunctions—is a fallacy; a question or conclusion deriving from a false theorem or axiom. There’s two things wrong with this question, the false dichotomy, and the premise behind the emanation of bifurcate polar opposites.

Mathematics is a symbolistic idea conjured up by our mental faculty as a method of looking at or perceiving things; the underlying concept of equations and what it entails is a discovery of how the physical world works. Meaning, our foregone predecessors or subsequent generations will conjure up their own abstract symbolistic notions to unravel the enigmas of their surroundings. A prime example is the historical hieroglyphics that dominated the the landscape of Egyptian civilization; the wall inscriptions were visual symbolisms to depict communication, whether interpreted literally or metaphorically….

The hieroglyphics is an idea of enigmatic and incomprehensible symbols, consisting of logographic and alphabetic etc—-symbolisms, but its depiction is a signification of communication. Hence, ideas may contrast each other symbolically, arithmetically, literally and metaphorically, but the the immutable deductive laws of what they entail share a common denominator. Musical notations, chord constructions and the aggregation of musical intervals into chromatic, diatonic and pentatonic scales, are fabricated ideas emanating from human cognition, and their models explain an intrinsic phenomenon.

Mathematics is a paradox, because it’s created and discovered simultaneously; but to demystify the paradox you have to partition the underlying definition of mathematics into polar opposites; and that’s the mutual exclusivity between an idea and an immutable deductive law; both definitions are intertwined in the abstract idea of symbolisms, and wrapped under one discipline. The geometry of an object and the symmetry of facial features are structuralism’s of nature, and we create models to describe these physical phenomena; the problem is we correlate mathematics and other symbolisms with nature itself, when it’s the language and mechanism used to describe objectively how nature works—-(like music?)
