Linguistics Units of Meaning

I’ve been researching Google’s autocompletion and spelling correction in the search query and found a few problematic calculations in the algorithm; pondering on this, I found a few key areas in the functions of linguistics units that could isolate the problem and possibly augment the algorithms ability to correct and complete its predictions more effectively and efficiently. A phoneme is a basic unit of linguistics sound in speech; examples are, “dog,” has three phonemes, “d,” “o,” and “g;” “love,” has four phonemes “l,” “o,” “v,” “e;” although both lexemes consist of one syllable, they have triple or more phonemes. Syllables are units of pronunciation and phonemes are units of sound; the former is a combination of graphemes to produce single or multiple syllables in a lexemic unit, and the latter is a combination of graphemes with independent phonemic units in each letter.

Graphemes are basic linguistics units of writing in orthographic systems that corresponds to letters, such individual units may or may not carry any semantical attributes; unlike derivational or inflectional morphemes, where they consist of multiple graphemic units that induce meaning that cannot be divided into smaller meaningless constituents. Morphemes are small meaningful units, and there’s different kinds; free morphemes and bound morphemes; the former are classified as independent standalone word functions, and the latter constitutes a morphological association to other morphemes; bound morphemes contrast free morphemes in that they’re not standalone units.

Bound morphemes example; unready, or jumping, constitutes a prefix or suffix affixation. Whereas affixed free morphemes consists of words such as, “blackboard,” “greenhouse,” and “mailman;” they’re standalone words whether they’re affixed or independent constituents. Compound words consist of two free morphemes or two bound morphemes; the former are words such as “blacklist” and “whitehouse,” and the latter, are words such as “astronaut” and “academic.” Compound words may or may not be connected by hyphens, and this punctuation affixation differs from dictionary to dictionary. Digraphs are linguistics units that represent two graphemes or two letters; examples are sh,” “th,” “st,” etc; digraphic units are consonant when joined to form a single phonemic sound when pronounced. Joined letters representing a single phonemic unit of sound; this is interesting because Google’s search suggestion is not chronological and don’t follow the alphabet timeline. In a standard dictionary the graphemic units increase in alphabetic order. In a standard dictionary graphemic units increase to morphemic units to word formation following the linear arrangement of the alphabet “abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz;” examples are, “sad,” where “a,” is the first letter after “s,” will follow the structure, “cdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz,’ until every graphemic letter has been utilized before incorporating “d,” into the same formula.

In Google’s search suggestion, with exceptions to information yielding results based on historical data of user activities, typo error or keyboard mishaps, the suggestions don’t follow a linear prediction and appears arbitrary in its suggestive results. Here’s what’s interesting, the fact that it’s not based on any structure connotes a prejudice in suggestions that’s influenced by not on the merits of words itself but rhetorics unrelated to linguistics. It’s not content influenced unless the criteria Google’s algorithm use to render quality content becomes stored historical data used to influence yield result in the search suggestive features. No matter how you engage this situation the vagueness is problematic and unsettling.
